Aqara Smart Lock U200 Review: The Matter-Standard Smart Lock That Finally Works
I've installed five smart locks over the years. The U200 is the first one I'd put on my own front door and forget about. Twelve minute install, six month battery, every input method works.

The smart lock I’d put on my own door
I’ve installed a lot of smart locks. Most have one fatal flaw — they lock you into one ecosystem (Apple, Google, Alexa) or they require monthly fees or they’re unreliable.
The Aqara U200 is the first one I’ve used that I would actually recommend. Here’s why.
The Matter part matters
Matter is the smart-home standard that finally made cross-ecosystem devices possible. The U200 is one of the first smart locks that:
- Works with Apple Home (via HomeKey — tap your iPhone to unlock)
- Works with Google Home
- Works with Alexa
- Works with SmartThings
- Works with Home Assistant
You pick one ecosystem (or use multiple). The lock doesn’t care.
The install
I installed the U200 on a standard US deadbolt in 12 minutes. The included instructions are actually useful. The lock fits over your existing deadbolt — no new drilling, no new keys (unless you want them).
Six months on AAs
The U200 runs on 4 AA batteries, not a rechargeable pack. Aqara rates it at 6 months; I got 5.5 in real use. When they die, you swap them — no charging downtime.
This is a bigger deal than it sounds. Rechargeable smart locks (Schlage Encode Plus, Yale Assure 2) need charging every 1-3 months. When the battery dies, you’re locked out. AA batteries are universal, available everywhere, and degrade predictably.
The input methods
Five ways to unlock:
- Fingerprint (fastest — under a second)
- Apple Home Key (tap iPhone or Apple Watch)
- NFC tag / Android equivalent
- Keypad code (with temporary guest codes)
- App (over Thread, Matter, or Bluetooth)
All five work. All five are fast. The fingerprint reader is the surprise winner — it’s faster than my phone’s face unlock.
The complaints
1. Aqara hub required for some features. Out of the box, basic lock/unlock works over Bluetooth. To get Matter, Thread, and remote access, you need the Aqara M3 hub ($89). Worth it for the full experience, but adds cost.
3. It’s still a smart lock. Aesthetics are functional, not premium. If your front door is a showpiece, you’ll notice.
Verdict
The U200 is the smart lock to buy in 2026. The Matter support means you’re not betting on the wrong ecosystem. The six-month battery means no surprise lockouts. The five input methods mean everyone in your house uses it the way they want.
$229 + $89 hub = $318 total. Cheaper than most premium smart locks, more interoperable than all of them.
